Let us make modifying the Prefilters easier.
How frequently should you replace your water softener filter?
In many household appliances, a water softening device is a key component of filtered water especially for people who live in crowded areas. Water softeners remove minerals from water supply in homes. The process greatly improves quality for water and prevents numerous issues like mineral build-up at the showerhead or sink and the drying skin from hard water. Installation however, isn’t sufficient; it’ll take more than one. You also require proper maintenance of the device and replacement of the used water filters, in a timely manner.
Your Water Softener
Water softeners remove minerals like chlorine, magnesium and calcium from the water supply. This improves the taste of your water and prevents hard water problems.
Hard water causes:
- Dry skin and hair
- Spots on dishes and glassware
- Bad taste in drinking water
So a water softener is a must have for many households. To keep your water softener working properly you need to maintain and replace filters. A whole house water filter will give you better tasting water throughout your home so it’s worth the money on it if you want better water quality.
Understanding your water softener system is key to maintenance and filter replacement. Let’s get started with the steps to change your water softener filter.
Before You Begin
Before you start the filter replacement process you need to prepare your system:
Find the by-pass valve installed with your water softener. This valve is usually located near the main unit. Turn the handle on the by-pass valve to show the yellow section in the opening. This puts water flow through the system in by-pass mode.
Note: By-pass valves and valve styles may vary depending on your water softener model. Check your user manual if you’re not sure where or how to operate the valve.
Depressurize the system. This step is required to change the prefilter and may not apply to all Kinetico Superkits. To do this:
- Find the 3/8″ plastic tubing coming from the by-pass/prefilter Superkit.
- Place a bucket or container under the tubing to catch any water that may come out during the process.
By following these steps you’ll be ready for a smooth filter replacement and minimal leaks and water spillage.
Inspect and clean your sump
Once discarded water can enter the tank and inspect for sediments and other materials in the bottom. Easily remove the sumper. Check your sump seal and O-rings before inserting a fresh or cleaned replacement cartridge. Ensure that the o-ring is cleaned properly. Avoid petroleum jelly and any other lubrication product. Get in touch with the dealer service side to find out what you need.
Replace Filter Cartridge
Now that you’ve prepared your system it’s time to replace the filter cartridge:
Remove the filter housing sump by turning it clockwise with both hands. This job may take some effort if the system isn’t fully depressurized.
Caution: The housing sump will be full of water pressure, so be careful not to spill.
Remove the used filter cartridge by turning it clockwise and throw it away.
If your filter cartridge is reusable:
- Rinse it with clean running water.
- Or use a solution of water and Iron Out for a deeper clean.
- Store the clean cartridge for future use.
Place the new or clean filter cartridge into the top of the filter housing. Turn the screw on the cartridge counter-clockwise until it stops. This will ensure it’s seated properly.
Turn On Your Water Softener
Now that you’ve replaced the filter cartridge it’s time to turn your water softener back on:
- Place the filter sump over the filter cartridge and make sure the threads line up.
- Turn the housing counter-clockwise until it seals.
Important: Make sure the arrows on the filter sump and housing are aligned for best performance.
